 How the Lousebuster Works
A specific combination of temperature, airflow, time and technique kills the lice.Head lice and lice eggs have a high water content, and they are accustomed to living in a protected and humid environment underneath hair. As such, rapid exposure to large amounts of dry, heated air causes them to overheat, dry out and die. So, when the lice and eggs are exposed to the right flow-rate of heated air at the right temperature, and for the right length of time, they die. Almost all prescription and over-the-counter medications sold today for treating head lice contain pesticides or other chemicals, many of which have the potential to cause irritating skin reactions or other harmful side effects. Unlike these products, the LouseBuster™ device uses only controlled, heated air, so it is very safe – even when used to treat people with asthma and those who have previously experienced side effects from other head lice treatment products.
 The LouseBuster™ device and its fundamental technology have been studied in controlled, IRB-approved clinical studies on over 500 people with head lice and, when used as directed, have been demonstrated to be safe for both the operator and the client with no reports of adverse events.
Because the device uses heated air, however, there is a slight possibility of scalp burn if the device is not used correctly. This risk has been minimized by numerous built-in safety features that assure that delivered air is controlled at a well-tolerated temperature and by requiring that the device is only used by LouseBuster Certified Operators™ on clients who don’t have conditions contraindicating device use.

Head lice are rapidly evolving resistance to many traditional pesticide-based control methods, which have never been able to kill eggs (nits) effectively and usually require repeated treatments. It is highly improbable that lice will be able to evolve resistance to the LouseBuster™ technology because the genetic mutations involved in resistance to pesticides would not protect lice from desiccation. And evolving "resistance" to desiccation is not an option for lice or any other small insect, for that matter. That would be like evolving the ability to go without water.
Based on clinical study data, the LouseBuster™ device kills or removes over 95% of head lice and eggs in one single treatment. Overall, greater than 99% of the eggs on people treated with the LouseBuster™ device are dead following treatment.
The type or length of hair does not impact effectiveness as long as the hair can be combed or picked through with a standard comb. Dead and living lice and eggs may remain in the hair after treatment. So, for cosmetic reasons, and to help assure that all lice and eggs are removed, Larada Sciences recommends that clients either receive or perform a complete comb-out with a fine-tooth louse comb after treatment.
